Commercialising Malaysia's Innovations in Bio-Based Industries

Programme Description

The Bioeconomy Accelerator Programme is designed for both emerging and established companies principally in the life sciences and ag biotech sectors in Malaysia.

There are 20 slots available for the programme, 10 from the Life Sciences sector, and 10 from the Agriculture sector, divided between two phases, all of which is discussed below.

Programme Duration

The programme will kick off in Malaysia in January 2015, and will continue until September 2015. Each group of identified companies via the tracks discussed below has a designated minimum and maximum period during which participants are expected to be involved.

Objectives and Characteristics

The programme was successfully developed as a pilot programme in 2009. It is designed to provide participants with an enhanced commercialisation profile in the marketplace, both within the ASEAN region, in the U.S. and across the globe, to enhance their commercial profile, further their commercial potential and increase their appeal to partners, buyers and collaborators. For BiotechCorp., this represents a critical opportunity to brand Malaysia as a hub for both industry and investment in the "Bioeconomy".

There are two phases in the programme:

Phase I - LaunchPad: All participants will go through a 7-month customised mentoring programme to increase participants’ understanding and awareness level of commercialisation processes and issues relating to their respective innovation. This phase includes critical feedback from relevant industry executives in formal sessions with the following characteristics:

  • An industry expert with domain knowledge and/or experience in the field will be assigned to you to develop and execute on an agreed-upon tools that will enable you to establish a solid footing in the marketplace where your innovation is best positioned. These tools may include:
    • Commercialisation Roadmap
    • Competitive Matrix and Profile
    • Barriers to Entry
    • Commercialisation Strategy
  • A network of experts in multiple domains is available to communicate with the company from time to time to ensure the “on point” development of market strategy and tactics and to provide timely feedback.
  • Additional domain experts are available to help address specific gaps or needs (e.g. IP).

Phase II - U.S. Soft Landing: 10 Participants (5 from each sectors) will have the opportunity to receive additional mentoring and attend a key event in the United States appropriate for the sector, with planned meetings at both venues with strategic partners/customer prospects.

  • Expert Resources will supplement the PA's mentoring in helping selected participants with specialized insights to assess viability for market entry/expansion, and prospects for partnering in preparation of the U.S. Soft Landing.
  • Selected participants from each sector (up to 5 from each sector) are invited attend one key event in the United States appropriate to each sector, with planned meetings at both venues with strategic partners/customer prospects.
